Y.T (YourzTruly) is a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer and recording artist who started out as a RnB artist, but expanded into hip-hop when he developed into a freestyle rap battler. He showcases these various skills on the album First Impression, from which this song is taken. He is notably the first artist to be signed to Fasho Records.

They Don't Put It Down Like You starts with a simple but effective intro of piano and the warm sound of Rhodes (electric piano) before a funky, intricately-programmed beat kicks in, along with a low-end synth that fills out the sound nicely. On top of this YourzTruly lays down a super catchy vocal hook that sticks in the mind instantly.

He layers the vocals and harmonies in a masterly way, so that, although they are complex, the clarity of the hook shines through. On the verses he alternates between fluent syncopated rapping then breaking it up with interweaving vocal lines/harmonies.
